WHAT IS CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY?

“Clinical Psychologists use their knowledge of psychology and mental health for the assessment, diagnosis, formulation, treatment, and prevention of psychological problems and mental illness across the lifespan. They research psychological problems and use their psychological knowledge to develop scientifically based approaches to improve mental health and wellbeing.”

- Psychology Board of Australia, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) -

All psychologists in Australia hold general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. When you seek help with a psychologist, you might see a psychologist with general registration, or one who also has a specific 'area of practice endorsement'.

An ‘endorsement’ indicates that a registered psychologist has qualifications in a particular area of practice (such as clinical psychology, health psychology or sport and exercise psychology) and an additional two years or more of supervised experience in that area. A psychologist with an area of practice endorsement usually has additional university qualifications and a minimum of eight years of university training and supervised experience in that area of practice endorsement.

Clinical Psychologists provide a wide range of psychological services to individuals across the lifespan and for mental health conditions that range from mild to severe and complex.

THERAPY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

  • Child Therapy

For children, therapy is often based on creativity and play to explore and understand emotions underlying behaviours of concern, and build skills in emotion regulation, communication, and expression.

  • Adolescent Therapy

Like any other life stage, adolescence comes with its own unique ups and downs. Therapy can be a great resource for young people to feel heard, and to reflect upon, problem-solve, and more confidently navigate challenges whenever they arise.

  • Adult Therapy

For adults, therapy is time dedicated to reflecting on life experiences, challenges, and successes, to come to a better understanding of one’s ways of responding, and their wishes for creating change.

THERAPY GROUPS & SKILL GROUPS

We are looking forward to launching therapy groups and skills groups soon, so stay tuned!

Group work can be beneficial to connect people with others with similar experiences, build social skills, normalise discussions about life’s challenges and mental health, and share in offering compassion and kindness to one another.

Therapy groups and skills groups will be periodically offered for specific age groups, and each program will have a specific focus. Future groups will include our social skills group for children, mindfulness and wellbeing group for adolescents, new parent support group, and mindfulness and stress-management for adults, to name just a few.

To be kept in the loop about when our group programs are launching, keep an eye on our social media, sign up to our clinic news emails, or register your interest for updates with reception.

ASSESSMENT

Seeking an assessment can be a complex and daunting process, and sometimes individuals and families are not sure where to start.

We offer a range of cognitive, academic, and neurodevelopmental assessments for all ages which we draw upon as needed to answer questions about a person’s strengths, challenges, skills, tendencies, and diagnosis (if applicable).

Psychological assessment can be useful for better understanding yourself or your child, and findings often assist in tailoring therapy to draw upon personal strengths and target the development of specific skills. Formal assessment is also often needed in the process of reaching a diagnosis, and often includes us collaborating with other professionals you have involved, as a multidisciplinary team.

To begin the assessment journey with Mind Matters, reception will schedule you an initial interview appointment at the clinic to explore your assessment needs and aims. At this appointment, we will discuss a range of factors such as any current presenting problems, the individual’s personal history, family and social history, school or work performance, and relevant medical conditions, injuries, or disabilities, as well as any past or present referrals or involvement from other professionals. This allows us to plan upcoming assessment sessions together by identifying the most suitable assessments that will provide us with valuable information and understanding.

After assessment sessions are complete, we integrate all of the information we have gathered, before providing feedback. We believe feedback is the most important part of the assessment process, so you’ll be provided with an in-depth written report including history, assessment results, conclusions, and recommendations for the future. You’ll also be invited to return to the clinic for a face-to-face feedback appointment to give you the opportunity to ask any questions and to help you best understand the assessment findings and the way forward.

Assessment consultation fees vary depending on your needs. For a personalised quote, please contact our friendly reception team with your enquiry.

CLINICAL SUPERVISION

As a Psychology Board-Approved Supervisor, Lisa (Clinical Psychologist) provides clinical supervision to provisional and registered psychologists, and other mental health practitioners. Competency-based supervision is offered with a focus on providing an encouraging environment to reflect on individual therapeutic practices, skills, and areas of development. We value the practice of engaging in clinical supervision, as well as offering supervision to ensure the ongoing quality of psychological services. Supervision can be conducted via telehealth or face-to-face, on a regular basis or as needed.
